Halloween Prop - Spooky "silver" Box

We wanted a prop to put on a side table along with some other small items. We got a plain wooden box from the Dollar Store, similar to this one.

We like shiny things so we decided to make the box look like it's silver.  To make it more interesting we cut out pieces of thin cardboard from a cracker box to make the edging and details and used hot glue to adhere them. Next, acrylic modeling paste was painted on to give texture to the smooth wood. The whole thing was painted light grey and then silver using acrylic craft paint.
After the silver was dry, black paint was dry-brushed into the edges of the cardboard to make it look like a tarnished silver box. The centre cardboard piece was painted red to look like a ruby. Later we may add a plastic ruby or jewel if we find one that would look like a good fit.

This Halloween we will have a lot of black lights so we added blue fluorescent paint to the raised cardboard. The blue is not visible unless under black light. We used neon tempura paint from Michaels.
